Mekayla Memorial NPC

This project was started by Anne-Marie Slabbert in Leeuhof, Vereeniging.

Leeuhof is home to a large number of poor families where the children do not know the luxury of the festive season, and sometimes do not even have food on Christmas day

Previously Anne- Marie distributed gifts she received from representatives to the community but after her daughters tragic death she started the Mekyala Memorial Street party for the children of Leehof to share some joy during these festive times with the unfortunate children, which became yearly event since December 2013.

The project started as a project to provide disadvantaged children with a treat around the festive season but are constantly growing. We are currently helping disadvantaged families with food parcels, clothing, blankets and items for their basic needs with donations we receive.

Mekayla's Story

The annual Street Party for the Leeuhof children which is dedicated to her three year old daughter Mekayla Slabbert who tragically passed on after being hit by a truck in front of the Leeuhof Cafe in Vereeniging.

The entire community was deeply shocked and over 400 members attended the funeral.

Mekayla was a beautiful, cheerful toddler, dearly loved by the Leeuhof community, who shared love, light and joy wherever she went and with these events we want to continue to share love light and joy with the children in Leeuhof in memory of this little piece of sunshine that was loved and still missed by many.

I do this in my little girl’s name, because she is my inspiration to keep going. Leeuhof is a community where there is a lot of alcohol and drug abuse. I would greatly appreciate it if you could help me, even if it’s just to join my group and raise awareness for Mekayla. Thank you so much for your interest.

She was our sunshine child. She was still young, but she cared a lot for others. At her funeral there were over 400 people – many from Leeuhof. She touched everyone with her love.)”

Mekayla was 3 years and a week old when the accident happened: 2007/10/23 - 2010/10/29

What We Do

01.

— Christmas Party Extravaganza Each year

We host a marvelous Christmas party for approximately 500 children in our community. It’s a day dedicated to leaving behind all the negativity and simply embracing joy.

We treat the children to delicious food, delightful presents, refreshing soft drinks, and ice lollies. The festivities also include thrilling jumping castles with water slides for endless fun and laughter.

02.

— Easter Egg Hunt Extravaganza

Over Easter weekend, we host exhilarating Easter egg hunts for around 250 children. We share the true meaning of Easter and whom we owe our gratitude to. Then, we unleash the children to hunt for Easter eggs scattered across the open field.

Once they’ve collected their eggs, they have the opportunity to take a cherished photo with the Easter Bunny. Unlike families who can drive to hunts outside their community, these children can’t go anywhere, making this event all the more special.

03.

— Festive Christmas Luncheon for Seniors Every year

We endeavor to host a delightful Christmas luncheon for 110 seniors in our community. For many, this may be their only opportunity to celebrate, as some have no one to spend Christmas with and others have little to eat. Our aim is to offer them a day of joy and pampering, where they can set aside their worries and indulge in a truly special experience.

We arrange for a singer to entertain them with music, encouraging a spot of dancing. The highlight of the day is a sumptuous three-course meal, carefully prepared to bring festive cheer and warmth to their hearts.”

04.

— Community Hall Upgrade & Restoration

This is one of our prospects this year, Only with your help will we be able to do this for the community.

05.

— Community Garden

One more of our prospects for 2025.
Planing a Vegteble garden

— Our Mission at Mekayla Memorial NPC

At Mekayla Memorial NPC, we are dedicated to making a positive impact in our community by supporting the children and elderly who are most in need. Our mission is driven by compassion, and we believe that every child and elder deserves a life of dignity and care.

However, we cannot achieve this without the invaluable support of our sponsors. Your generosity can make a profound difference. We urgently need your help to continue our vital work and bring hope to those who need it most.

We earnestly seek Assistance

“Leeuhof is an underprivileged community. At the Mekayla Memorial NPC, our mission is to empower and uplift our community to its fullest potential. Unfortunately, Leeuhof has been marred by negative publicity due to drug and alcohol misuse. Both the children and the elderly are adversely affected by these issues. We earnestly seek assistance to help us support and rejuvenate our community.”

Impact Stories

The Community Hall

The Community Hall serves as a vital center for our residents, especially those seeking assistance. Understanding the challenges faced by the less fortunate, we requested support from the local Council to facilitate their indigent applications. For elderly individuals unable to visit the Council Offices, we coordinate to complete all necessary paperwork at the Hall. Our dedicated Councillor signs and collects these documents, ensuring they are promptly delivered to the Offices for processing. This invaluable service alleviates the burden of travel expenses and logistical stress for many without transportation options. The gratitude from our seniors speaks volumes about the impact of this initiative.

The Clinic

Having a clinic right at our doorstep is an immense blessing for the disadvantaged in our community. The Local Clinic visits weekly to provide blood pressure and diabetes checks, often identifying health issues that residents were unaware of. This proactive healthcare service has been life-saving for those previously oblivious to their conditions. Additionally, the Clinic is always on call, offering reliable house calls whenever needed. This dependable presence is a crucial support system for our community, providing care and peace of mind to those who need it most.
